A global COVID-19 vaccination digital passport

EuCham supports the initiative of the World Economic Forum and The Commons Project (Swiss nonprofit) in developing a global standard for a digital pass enabling passengers to move between countries. As per today, a complicated array of different requirements and COVID-19 certifications is making travel across countries very difficult.

Launched by the World Economic Forum and The Commons Project, a Swiss-based foundation established with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, in conjunction with representatives of 37 countries, the digital pass is starting international trials showing a passenger’s COVID-19 status while protecting other health information.

Hong Kong, Singapore, London, New York are between the first airports testing the app on selected flights.

The European Chamber, in line with its mission of improving the environment for businesses, is also a pioneer in developing global standards. The Green Policy, developed by its initiative Greenwill, is the only world standard model evironmental policy, available in 40 languages and used in over 122 countries globally.

The Commons Project is also building global digital services and platforms for the common good. Today is working with a coalition of public and private partners around the world to develop and launch CommonPass, to enable people to document their certified COVID-19 status, while keeping other health information private.

“The world needs more standards and common procedures,” said Mr Michele Orzan, President of EuCham. “Public-private cooperation can lead to extraordinary developments and increased efficiency, allowing humanity to get more benefits with less waste and unnecessary work.” To facilitate travel and border crossing again, he continues, all institutions should collaborate as much as possible, without delay.
